Description

Old Rose Cottage is a building that was originally two houses, now combined into one dwelling. It dates from the early 17th century and was extended, likely in the late 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and around 1930. The structure is timber-framed with rendered infill sitting on a rubble base, topped with an asbestos-tiled roof.

Originally, the cottage consisted of two framed bays aligned roughly north to south. In the late 17th century, it was extended by two additional framed bays at the southern end, during which a large external brick chimney with offsets was added to the center of the west elevation. The southernmost bay was demolished, probably around 1930. The cottage is a single storey with an attic that features dormers.

The framing includes three rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and a collar and tie-beam truss with four struts to the collar and a V-strut in the apex at the north end. The roof of the current southernmost bay was raised and rebuilt around 1930, and an additional row of panels was added beneath the eaves level.

On the east front elevation, the original part of the cottage has two 20th-century hip-roofed canted bay windows on the ground floor and a 20th-century raking-top dormer with a three-light casement. The additional bay also features a similar dormer window. The main entrance at the south end has a lean-to 20th-century porch with square side lights and a part-glazed door. There are attic lights at the gable ends and lean-to additions at the rear.

Inside, the chimney is now blocked but originally served two fireplaces, both of which had bread ovens. The cottage is included for its group value with Holly Tree Cottage.
