Description

Farmhouse. Dating from the 14th century, it has been altered over time. The structure is timber-frame with painted brick and some wattle-and-daub infill, and a plain tiled roof with a brick stack positioned off-centre. It follows a "T" plan, featuring a cross-passage alongside a hall on the left, and a solar cross-wing to the far left. The building is single-storey with attic dormers, except for the cross-wing, which is two storeys high. The north gable of the cross-wing has a decorative, cusped bargeboard. Later 19th and 20th century additions consist of a lean-to structure covering most of the front facade. There are three 20th-century windows and a centrally placed 20th-century door. A projecting stack and bay window are on the rear of the cross-wing. Inside, the passage has mortice holes in the head beam, indicating the former positions of three doorways. The hall contains an inserted stack and the first floor is supported by stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The remains of a spere truss are present at the lower end, while a central cruck truss has chamfered blades and collar, with foiled raking struts forming a central quatrefoil flanked by trefoils. There is also an intermediate arch-braced collar-beam truss with foiled raking struts above the collar, alongside a single curved windbrace. The solar cross-wing has four bays with two arch-braced collar-beam trusses and a central tie-beam truss with raking struts. The house is partly surrounded by a moat.
