Description

Old Plaistow is a farmhouse, likely originally an open hall house that had a floor added soon after it was built. It dates from the late medieval period and was altered in the 16th to 17th centuries. The building features a timber frame with painted brick infill and a plain tiled roof. It has a T-plan layout with a cross-wing on the left side. The house is single storey with attics in gabled dormers, while the cross-wing is two storeys tall. There are three windows plus one in the wing, all of which are 20th-century two-light cross and casement windows. A 20th-century door is located to the left, set within an open timber porch. There is a projecting stack on the left side of the cross-wing. Attached to the right gable of the house is an in situ cider mill. Inside, the central ground floor room has an exposed frame with traces of painted decoration, including an inscription and shields featuring the initials "AM," along with wide stop-chamfered beams.
