Description
Walter Scott Charity School is a building founded in 1717 as a Bluecoat School for 30 boys and 30 girls. It became disused due to a lack of funds but was re-endowed by Walter Scott, a local citizen, in 1786 and restored in 1887. The school is two storeys high with a cellar and is constructed of red brick. The central section of the building projects forward and features a pediment. It has a pattern of two-three-two sash windows, although the central window has been replaced with an inscription detailing important dates. On the ground floor, there are six sash windows set in arched recesses with a band below. These windows have round heads and are framed with architraves. A moulded cornice connects the tops of the arches. The building has a stucco plinth and a wide doorway topped with an open pediment supported by Tuscan columns and pilasters, along with a wide fanlight. Slender stone gate piers with ball terminals are located at the entrance.
