Description
The Church Cottage is a former church ale-house and dwelling, now used for storage. It dates from the late 16th century to the early 17th century. The building features a timber frame set on a stone base, with regular rectangular infill panels made of brick and wattle-and-daub. It has a continuous tiled roof and a brick chimney shaft located one bay from the left. The structure is one storey with an attic and includes a gabled dormer. It has four bays; the three bays on the left have diagonal struts from the cill to the posts, while the right bay, which is recessed and likely an extension, does not have these struts. The windows are 18th-century casements, and there are three entrances at the front and one on the left side, all featuring beaded and ledged 18th-century doors. Inside, there are two very large 17th-century fireplaces served by a single chimney, which has been inserted in a way that cuts through the tie-beam separating the first and second bays from the left.
