Description

This building is an outbuilding located about 20 yards north-east of Great Penllan Farmhouse. It dates back to the 15th century or earlier and was extended in the 17th century, with further alterations made in the late 19th century and mid- to late 20th century. The structure is partly timber-framed and has been refaced and extended with rubble, along with some corrugated metal cladding and corrugated asbestos roofs. Originally a cruck hall house with two bays aligned north-east to south-west, a large chimney was added at the north-east end, likely when the building was divided into two storeys and an additional bay was constructed at the south-east end during the 17th century. In the 19th century, it was refaced and extended to the north-east by approximately five bays to create a larger outbuilding.

The building has two levels. The main north-west elevation features two ground floor windows (one with a cambered brick head), four roof lights, and six doors (including one stable door and two with cambered brick heads). There is a single-bay, two-level wing that projects from the second bay from the south-west end, which includes a loft door in its gable end. Additionally, a lean-to outshut is attached to the south-west bay. Inside, three pairs of full cruck trusses remain largely intact, and there is a re-used moulded and embattled 15th-century beam. The 17th-century wall framing is visible at the south-west end, and part of the inserted rubble chimney still exists. The building was recently re-roofed in July 1986.
