Description
This barn, located about 15 yards south-west of Sunny Bank, dates from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed from a combination of rubble, timber framing, and weatherboarding, topped with a half-hipped corrugated iron roof at the south end. The barn consists of four bays arranged roughly north to south, featuring a wagon bay with opposed cart entries and double doors in the second bay from the south end. There are ventilation slits in the rubble wall at the south end, and a lean-to outshut is present on the north-east side.
Inside, the wall framing includes long rectangular panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners. The roof structure comprises a collar and tie-beam truss with struts at the north end, a tie-beam truss with five large struts at the south end, and three intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts, supported by three tiers of trenched purlins. The barn is notably large and is positioned close to Sunny Bank, contributing to its group value.
