Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church consecrated in 1844, founded by local notable John Powell, likely replacing an earlier church. It is constructed of coursed rubble with a slate roof and exhibits a simple, unacademic Gothic style that reflects 18th-century patterns. The church features a chance of one bay, a three-bay nave, and a two-stage crenellated west tower. The nave and the slightly narrower chancel are covered by a continuous roof. The east window has three lights with a depressed arch for the center light, while the nave windows are adorned with diamond pattern glazing. There is a pointed arch entry to the west. Inside, the east window contains stained glass from 1869. The nave retains an old-fashioned stove made by G Portway and Son of Halsted, Essex, which bears the motto "Slow but Sure." Additionally, there are the Royal Arms of George III and Commandment and Pater boards on the west wall. The font is from the 13th century, and the pulpit is Jacobean.
