Description

St Charles House is a pair of unoccupied almshouses built in 1887 by P P Pugin for Mrs de la Barre Bodenham of Rotherwas. The building is constructed of brick with sandstone dressings and features a pantile roof with brick and stone ridge stacks. It has a rectangular plan oriented roughly east to west and is designed in an eclectic style, consisting of two storeys with an attic.

The south elevation includes three windows with 2-light mullions, which are concealed behind a first-floor verandah supported by posts with angle struts. There is a ledged door to the left of the centre and another door at the extreme right of the verandah. The roof features three raking-top dormers, each with two cinquefoil-headed lights.

On the ground floor, there are two projections, one on the left-hand side and another to the right of centre, both supporting the verandah. Each projection has three narrow chamfered lights with four-centred heads and is supported by a pair of stepped corbels. There are two entries, one in the centre and another on the right-hand side. Attached to the left is a single-storey wing with a 3-light bay window and a door to its left. The roof of this wing is hipped. To the right of the main block is a two-storey wing with steps leading up to the right end of the verandah. The interior was inaccessible during the last survey in July 1986.
