Description
The Powell memorial, located about 5 metres south of the tower of the Church of St Mary, is a chest tomb dating from the late 18th century. It is signed by E Kyte of Hay (on Wye) and constructed from ashlar stone. The memorial features a Greek Revival sarcophagus supported by four feet and set on a plinth with three steps. It has corner finials and a shallow pyramidal cap. The rectangular inscription panels are framed by fluted surrounds. The main inscription reads: "To the Memory of John Powell second Son/ of Louisa Powell, who departed this life/ on the 20th day of May 1796, Aged 26 years/ He was at the early aged of 26 appointed/ Surgeon to His Majesty's Forces in the/ West Indies; and was seized with the yellow/ fever during the attack of the Island of St Domingo, to which he fell a victim." There are also inscriptions on other faces of the tomb. This memorial is a fine example of stone masonry and enhances the church's setting, contributing to the group value of the other memorials in the churchyard.
