Description
Palace Pound is a 17th-century building located on the west side of St Mary's Street. It is believed to have been part of the Bishop's Palace that once occupied the site of the Royal Hotel. The structure has three storeys and is finished in stucco. It features flanking two-storeyed bays set on high bases with moulded cornices. The south return has a gable adorned with a heavy ornamental barge board. There is a Gothic stone doorway with a four-centred arch, and it is reported that there are three original two-light windows and a blocked doorway in the basement. Inside, there is a late 17th-century staircase and some fragments of glass dating from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Palace Pound and Palace Pound Cottage are considered to form a group.
