Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a notable church featuring a nave, North and South aisles, a square tower with pinnacles at the corners, and a graceful spire. It is constructed from local red sandstone with ashlar dressings, incorporating some 12th-century materials. The church was rebuilt in the 13th century and dedicated in 1316, with significant restoration occurring in 1878. The window tracery is primarily from the 19th century, while the nave, parts of the chancel, and the North and South aisles date back to the 13th century. The tower, spire, the two-storey South porch, North porch, parts of the chancel, and the sanctuary are from the 14th century, and the roof of the South aisle is from the 15th century. The east window features 15th-century glass. Inside, there are many fine 16th and 17th-century alabaster monuments to the Rudhall family, along with other notable monuments. The church also contains 17th-century communion rails, a font from the late 17th or early 18th century, and gates of scrolled ironwork in the North porch, also from the 17th century. Additionally, there is a 13th-century coffin and lid. Inside the church, there are dead trunks of elm suckers that were once green.
