Description

White House Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 15th century, with a cross-wing added in the mid-16th century, later 17th-century additions, and alterations from the mid to late 19th century, along with a restoration in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed, featuring sections of painted brick and plastered infill on a sandstone rubble plinth, and has a tiled roof.

The hall wing consists of four bays, with the two northeastern bays being a 17th-century addition, and the cross-wing is attached to the southwest. There is a main axial stack in the hall and a gable-end stack in the cross-wing. The hall is single storey with an attic, featuring one square-headed opening in the panelling of the framing to the left of a ledged doorway, and a 2-light casement window in a gabled dormer to the right above a former window of the hall that has six small ogee heads; the lower part of this window has an inserted 2-light 19th-century casement window.

The two 17th-century bays have square panelled framing, while the 15th-century bays exhibit irregular square panelled framing with a large brace to the left of the window. The gable end of the cross-wing is two storeys high with a jettied upper storey, featuring a 2-light casement window on the upper floor and a similar window on the ground floor to the right of a panelled door. Inside the hall block, cruck trusses can be seen, with an arch-braced and moulded central truss. The smoke-blackened roof includes two rows of purlins and one tier of wind-braces.
