Description

Upper House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with later modifications from the 18th and late 19th centuries. The original structure is timber-framed, featuring sections of wattle-and-daub and painted brick infill. The 18th-century renovations included a re-facing in painted sandstone rubble, while the 19th-century work involved further remodelling and a re-facing in red brick. The roof is a combination of Welsh slate and imitation slate.

The building is arranged in an L-shape, with a rear service wing and a projecting stair turret. It has a large axial stack at the junction of the main wings, along with a later gable-end stack on the south side and a lateral stack on the north wing. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with cellars, and the service wing has a single storey and an attic.

The west front has been refaced with brick. The gable-end of the left wing features a three-light casement window, a ledged door, and a six-pane casement window on the ground floor. The gable has a three-light casement window to the right and a gabled canopy over a six-panelled door below. To the right, there are two three-light casement windows and a French casement window on the ground floor.

At the rear, three and four square panelled timber-framing is visible, although partly obscured by the sandstone rubble facing. Inside, there is an octagonal wooden newel for the stairs with renewed treads and risers, a large open fireplace with chamfered jambs and lintel in the main room, and further chamfered ceiling beams in the ground floor rooms.
