Description

Wye Terrace comprises a row of eight early 19th-century houses located on Bridge Street in Hereford. The houses are built of brick with a stone plinth, stucco architraves, lintels, and quoins, and have hipped slate roofs with four brick ridge stacks.

The three-storey facade presents an eight-window arrangement. Most windows are 2/2 sashes with 1/1 sashes either side, set in painted reveals, stone sills, and vermiculated keyed stucco lintels. Number 1 has an altered 3/3 sash under a keyed stucco lintel. The houses have 4-panel doors with plain overlights in stuccoed architraves, with one door at each end, and others in pairs. A continuous verandah with cast-iron decoration covers six windows at Number 1, and a painted brick band runs above. The rear elevation incorporates 6/6 sashes, along with 3/3 and coloured margin-glazed sashes. Two-storey "outshut" wings extend from the rear, featuring coloured margin-glazed sashes.

The interiors of Nos. 2, 3, 5, and 8 retain dogleg staircases with stick balusters and turned newels; the interiors of Nos. 1, 4, 6, and 7 were not inspected. Number 2 features a dogleg staircase, 4-panel doors, cast-iron fireplaces on the second floor, a late 19th-century tiled fireplace with a wood surround on the first floor, and a fireplace on the ground floor. The cellar has a winder stair and is stone-lined, with a box store. Number 3’s staircase is similar to No. 2 and includes 4-panel doors, cast-iron fireplaces on the second floor, wall cupboards, a tiled fireplace on the first floor, and a partly stone-lined ground floor with a tiled fireplace. The cellar is stone-lined with a winder stair. Number 5 has a similar staircase and doors, with a cast-iron fireplace to the rear room on the second floor, a cast-iron grate with a wood surround on the first floor, and a reset fireplace on the ground floor, and a stone-lined cellar. Number 8 has a similar staircase and doors, a cast-iron firegrate with a pine surround on the ground floor, a stone-lined cellar, and an original winder stair.
