Description

An early 18th-century house, originally listed as a Police Station and formerly known as Rutherglen, is constructed of red brick with a tiled hipped roof. The building features moulded brick eaves with dentil blocks, and it stands two storeys high with an attic. It has three windows on the front elevation. The windows are double-hung sashes with thick glazing bars, each set within a flat brick arch that has an enriched keyblock and a bull-nose sill. The central doorway has an elaborate rusticated (Gibbs) surround with radiating keyblocks and a pediment containing a miniature fanlight. The doorway is topped with a moulded fielded-panel door. Two hipped attic dormers, each with a cornice, are present. Brick corner pilasters rise to the chimney. The right-hand return elevation has three matching windows. A large rear wing is brick-faced and includes four sash windows with glazing bars, with timber framing exposed in the gable end. The house forms a group with the Town Council Offices (No 3), Public Lavatories, Weavers Cottage, Prince of Wales Inn, and the Old Grammar School.
