Description

The dovecot, located about 80 yards southeast of the Church of St Michael, dates back to the 14th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a truncated conical roof that rises to a parapet, behind which sits a central domed cupola supported on shafts. The dovecot has a circular plan and a battered base, with water spouts located on the north and south sides. The entrance on the south side, which dates to the 14th century, has shouldered jambs and a square head above it, along with an illegible inscription noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments. There is also a 2-centred relieving arch above the entrance. A square-headed doorway on the north side is possibly from the 19th century. Inside, the dovecot features a domical stone roof with a circular central opening, 19 rows of nesting holes, and a large stone at the center where a potence would have been located.
