Description
Upper Goytre is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with additions from the 17th century and some late 19th century and minor 20th century alterations. The building features part rendered sandstone rubble and a Welsh slate roof. It has a long range that is aligned northeast to southwest, with a central later cross-wing. The former through-passage is now blocked, and there is one gable-end stack along with an axial stack, which has a later 19th century addition on the gable end of the central cross-wing on the southeast front.
The northwest front is single storey with an attic and includes a central slate-hung gable featuring a 2-light casement window. There are three windows on the ground floor, including one below the gable with a 4-light ovolo-moulded window that has a square-headed label. To the right, there is a 2-light casement window in a blocked doorway of the former through-passage, and a 20th century window to the right of that. The southeast front has a 19th century ledged door, with one 20th century window to the left and irregular scattered 20th century windows to the right.
Inside, the farmhouse reveals cruck construction, with two cruck trusses remaining fairly intact. The interior features very good heavily moulded ceiling beams and joists with carved foliage stops in the room to the northeast of the entrance, likely a primary floor. The remaining ceiling beams, which are probably inserted, are also chamfered, with moulded beams in the central room. There are two stone winder staircases that are integral with the stacks, large open fireplaces, and a triangular-headed niche in the lintel of the southwest gable-end stack, as well as a square-headed niche in the lintel of the northeast fireplace and a triangular-headed doorway to the southwest staircase.
