Description

The former canal warehouse, located approximately 50 metres north-northwest of Wharf House, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of brick with a pantile roof and has a rectangular layout. The building stands two storeys tall and features two small windows on each floor. The ground floor windows have segmental heads, while the first-floor windows break into the dentil eaves cornice, and all windows have stone sills. The roof extends over a continuous rear outshut, with the rear wall rebuilt using blockwork. Each gable end contains a large doorway, with a smaller high-level doorway situated above it.

The Grantham Canal, which this warehouse served, was authorized in 1793. This section, running from the Trent to the Leicestershire border, was constructed by James Green, a surveyor working for Lord Middleton of Wollaton Hall, while the remainder was built by William King, agent to the Duke of Rutland at Belvoir.
