Description
No. 1 Soar Lane is a house that dates from the 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed with red brick nogging, primarily arranged in a herringbone pattern, and features some rubble and render. The roof is covered with plain tiles. At the rear gable, there is a modern red brick and render stack, along with a single red brick stack on the left side. The building has a deep rubble plinth and stands two storeys plus a garret, with a first-floor jetty and three bays on the gable end facing the road. The framing is small, and there is a single tripartite glazing bar Yorkshire sash window flanked by two similar two-light sashes. Above these, there are three similar sashes and a single small glazing bar casement in the garret. A bressumer is dated "1661". The left or south front has similar framing to the majority of the right bays, but with larger framing on the left side. It features a single casement window with some glazing bars and a single glazing bar Yorkshire sash to the left. Above this is another single casement with some glazing bars. There is a rendered lean-to attached to the left side. The first-floor windows are believed to have been inserted to provide light for a framework knitter's workshop.
