Description
Barn Court is a former barn that has been converted into a house. It dates from the early 18th century but retains the roof system and half-posts of a 16th or 17th-century structure. The conversion into a house took place in the 1980s. The building is constructed of brick and features a pantile roof with gable copings on square kneelers, along with two inserted ridge stacks and three roof lights on each pitch.
Originally, it was a three-bay structure with full-height, opposing square-headed cart entries. The cart entry on the south side has been fully glazed and is flanked by two large casement windows on the right and two smaller ones on the left, all with segmental heads. The cart entry on the north side, which faces into the courtyard, has been partially blocked to create a smaller segmental-headed doorway that is now glazed, accompanied by two small flanking lights. Ventilation slits are present on both elevations.
Attached to the right side of the north elevation is a lower range that has been extended on the west side. This range is part of a series of former cattle sheds that enclose the farmyard to the north of the house. Inside, the central bay is marked by two frames that are arch-braced to half-posts. One of these frames has housings for studding, with vertical elements below the tie-beam and a chevron pattern above. There are two purlins to each pitch, which are arch-braced to the principal rafters.
