Description

Radcliffe Hall, now the Royal British Legion Club, is a house dating from the late 18th century with mid-19th century extensions. The building is rendered with an ashlar plinth and has a concrete pantile roof, featuring a single rendered stack. The original 18th-century front is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The central doorway has a part-glazed door and a plain fanlight, flanked by single pilasters with fluted panels and fluted imposts topped with a band of dentil. An arch above features reeded panels and a fluted keystone, with single glazing bar sashes on either side. The upper floor has three similar sashes, with three smaller sashes on the top floor. To the right, slightly set back, is a narrow two-and-a-half storey lean-to with a single 20th-century light and a small fixed light above. To the left is a 19th-century wing of the same height, also two storeys and three bays. The left single bay projects slightly and features a two-storey canted bay under a conical roof, with two glazing bar sashes. The canted bay has a central doorway with a glazing bar door and overlight, flanked by single low glazing bar sashes. Above are five similar smaller sashes. The rear of the building has 19th-century extensions. Inside, there is a 19th-century open well staircase with decorative wrought iron balusters, and some ground floor rooms from the 19th century have decorative plaster ceilings.
