Description

THE CEDARS AND SUTTON FIELDS HOUSE

A house, now converted into two separate dwellings, constructed in 1875. Built of rock-face ashlar with ashlar dressings, the building features a slate roof with decorative ridge tiles and sits on a plinth with first-floor bands. The structure is two storeys plus cellar, arranged across 10 bays.

The design is notably symmetrical with distinctive projecting gabled bays at the outer ends of the façade. The fourth bays from both the right and left project slightly and are gabled, while the outer two bays on each side project further and rise to two storeys plus a garret storey. These corner bays are supported on diagonal buttresses, over which rise single small mock turrets with decorative capitals and conical pinnacles mounted on decorated bands and supported by decorative corbels.

A decorative eaves band runs across all but the gabled bays, and a decorative parapet crowns the structure. Two ridge stacks and two lateral stacks of ashlar construction punctuate the roofline.

The cellar level features six pairs of pointed arched openings. The ground floor displays two central pointed arched ashlar openings, each containing a single Caernarvon arched doorway with a trefoil arched fixed light above. On either side are single tripartite sashes, each with Caernarvon arches and flanked by colonnettes with decorative capitals. Above these are shaped ashlar panels containing trefoil fixed lights over the outer sashes and three trefoil fixed lights over the central sash (though the right-hand window now has a single casement and lacks trefoils). Further left and right are single Caernarvon arched sashes with single trefoil arched fixed lights above. The outer four bays contain single Caernarvon arched sashes flanked by colonnettes with decorative capitals, each with a single arched ashlar panel above containing an arched fixed light. All openings except those with hood moulds are topped by polychromatic flush ashlar arches, with shaped hood moulds and decorative label stops providing further embellishment.

The first floor continues the elaborate fenestration scheme with two Caernarvon arched sashes in the central section. Flanking these are single tripartite sashes, each with flanking colonnettes with decorative capitals. The central sash has a single trefoil fixed light above, while the outer sashes have single quatrefoil fixed lights (though the right window now has a casement without the trefoil). Again, shaped hood moulds and decorative label stops adorn these openings. To the right and left are similar single Caernarvon arched sashes. The outer four bays feature single Caernarvon arched sashes flanked by colonnettes, topped by single ogee arched ashlar panels containing small trefoils with foliate and quatrefoil spandrel decoration. These are crowned with pointed segmental arched hood moulds with decorative label stops and finials in the form of human heads.

The gable apexes each contain a single Caernarvon arched sash flanked by colonnettes set within segmental arched panels with hood moulds and decorative label stops. Following the line of each gable is a decorative band forming a segmental arch over each hood mould, with diaper decoration at the apex.

The east wall bears a plaque inscribed "W.T. 1875".

The rear of Sutton Fields House features a diagonal buttressed gabled porch with a decorated arched entrance supported on either side by pairs of colonnettes. Additional decoration adorns the gable apex. The inner moulded arched doorway is flanked by single colonnettes with foliate decorated capitals.
