Description
Southwell Baptist Chapel and the adjoining house were originally built in 1808 as the parish workhouse and were converted into a chapel with an attached manse around 1839. The building has mid-19th century and late 20th century additions, and it was restored and the interior refitted in 1989 by John Severn.
The structure is made of brick with a stucco front, stone dressings, and a hipped slate roof. It features a plinth, a first floor band, moulded eaves, and a single gable stack. The front has glazing bar sash windows, arranged in a single range of six, with a projecting semicircular central bay at both the front and rear. The two-storey chapel on the right has four tall round-headed sashes above and four smaller flat-headed sashes below. The three-storey house on the left has two flat-headed sashes on each floor. The projecting rear bay has similar window styles to the front bay. The right end of the building has a stucco porch with a parapet and the inscription "Baptist Chapel" above the door, along with a parapeted brick porch added in 1989. The rear features a mid-19th century addition made of brick with a pantile roof, which has a single gable and side wall stacks. This addition is two storeys high with a three-window range, and the windows are cross casements with segmental heads, along with an off-centre door that also has a segmental head.
