Description
Carr Bank is a country house that has been converted into a hotel. It was built in the early 19th century, with additions and alterations made in the mid-19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings and features hipped slate roofs with four ridge stacks, two of which are capped. It has moulded cornices and is two storeys high with three bays.
The south front of the house features a central semicircular porch made of painted ashlar, supported by clustered columns and topped with a cornice. The porch has a glazed door flanked by tall glazing bar windows, all of which include overlights. Inside the porch, there is a plain round-headed ashlar inner doorcase with a half-glazed door that has etched glass panels and a fanlight above. Above the porch, there is a canted bay window that is slate hung, featuring a cornice and three plain sash windows. On either side of the porch, there are canted two-storey stone bay windows, each with a first-floor sill band and moulded cornice, containing three plain sash windows on each floor, with the lower ones being taller.
At the rear of the building, there is a large two-storey addition made of rock-faced stone. Inside, the staircase hall features a mutule ceiling cornice, an Adam-style frieze, and an oval skylight. The hall contains a stone dogleg staircase with a shaped landing, stick balusters, and a ramped scrolled handrail. The front ground-floor room has an enriched cornice.
