Description
Calverton War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and is prominently located within Calverton Cemetery. The memorial features a smoothly worked wheel head cross that sits atop a tapering plinth, which is set on a three-step base, standing approximately 3.5 meters high. It is enclosed by a square area that has a low, smooth stone perimeter wall topped with an iron post and chain link fence.
The shaft of the memorial bears the inscription "PRO PATRIA," while the rest of the text is engraved on marble panels on all four sides of the plinth and on the first step of one side. The inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF CALVERTON,/ WHO IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918/ LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY." The names of the fallen are listed on the remaining three faces.
On the riser of the top step, there is an additional inscription: "ALSO THOSE WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945 (NAMES)."
