Description
Alexandra Lodge is a pair of lodges built in the early 1860s, designed by S. S. Teulon for the Tenth Duke of St. Albans. They are in the Gothic Revival style and were restored in 1983. The lodges feature brick and timber framing with gabled, pyramidal, and polygonal slate roofs, along with a partial moulded plinth, a first-floor band, and dentillated eaves. They have two grouped buttressed ridge stacks and are two to three storeys tall with five bays. The windows are late 20th-century casements set in the original openings.
On the northwest side, there is a central rebated archway with a hood mould, flanked by a buttress on the left and an octagonal stair turret on the right. The turret has three stages, a single stair light, a polygonal roof, and a finial. Beyond the turret are two casements, and above them are two plaques with a monogram, dated 1877. To the left, there is a gabled cross eaves dormer, and to the right, another casement. Above the gatehouse, there is a jettied third stage with a square oriel window supported by shaped brackets. Below this, a wooden plaque is inscribed "Alexandra Lodges July 3rd 1878," commemorating a Royal visit. Each gable features a central chamfered doorway and a casement above. The southeast side mirrors the northwest side. Below the archway, there are two doorways and a pair of buttresses that support scrolled wrought iron gates.
