Description

This group of five headstones is located in the churchyard of St. Gregory, just 3 metres south of the south aisle. The headstones date from 1735, 1736, and 1737 and are made of ashlar stone.

The first is a single rectangular headstone with a shaped top, inscribed with the details of Sarah, the wife of John Brett, who passed away on June 26, 1737. The next two headstones are double rectangular stones, each featuring two arches adorned with a cherub head carved in relief. The first of these is inscribed for Sarah, the wife of Nathan Giles, who died on August 6, 1736, at the age of 54, and for Nathan Giles himself, who died in 1735 at the age of 49. The second double headstone commemorates Nathan Giles, the son of Nathan and Sarah, who died on March 20, 1735, at the age of 25, and John Giles, their son, who died on May 13 in an unspecified year at the age of 22.

Two metres to the east of this row are two additional rectangular headstones. The left headstone, which has a shaped top, is inscribed for Elizabeth, the wife of William Giles, who died on August 28, 1747, at the age of 30. The right headstone is a double stone with two shaped arches, inscribed for Mary, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Giles, who died in November 1736 at the age of 1 month, and for John, their son, who died in March 1737 at the age of 11 days.
