Description

The Church of St. Giles is a parish church dating back to around 1200, with significant rebuilding in the 19th century (C19), except for the tower. It is constructed of ashlar and rough-hewn ashlar, with tile roofs and coped ridges featuring single crosses to the east of the nave, east chancel, and west and east of the north aisle. A single stack is located at the east end of the north aisle. The church consists of a tower, nave, north aisle, north vestry, and chancel.

The circa 1200 tower is of three stages, featuring a string course at each junction and a C19 pyramidal roof. It has a single lancet window to the west, and the four belfry openings have two lights each, separated by a single stone mullion under a flat head. Clock faces are present on the south and west sides, with a single lancet window at the second stage on the north side. A brick and tile lean-to abuts the northwest aisle.

The C19 north aisle has a multifoil window with a hood mould and label stops on its north wall. The north wall also features three cusped and arched lights with hood moulds and label stops. The east wall contains a small arched and cusped light in the apex. The vestry has a single small arched and cusped light with a hood mould and label stops and a doorway with a wooden door. The east vestry features a single arched, traceried two-light window with cusping, a hood mould, and label stops. The east chancel has an arched five-light window with intersecting tracery. A central arched doorway with a hood mould and decorated label stops is in the south chancel wall, with a two-light arched window to the right and a single arched light to the left, both C19 and incorporating tracery, cusping, hood mould, and head label stops. The buttressed nave has two C19 arched two-light windows with tracery, cusping, hood mould, and label stops. A circa 1200 arched doorway, featuring two slim engaged columns with waterleaf capitals supporting a moulded arch with a dogtooth hood mould, is located on the left.

Inside, the three-bay nave arcade has octagonal columns and moulded capitals supporting double chamfered arches; the western respond continues the inner chamfer, while the eastern side is supported on a castellated corbel. A double chamfered tower arch is also present. The outer arch of the double chamfered chancel arch is supported on slim engaged columns with foliate decorated capitals. A chamfered arched vestry doorway is present. In the south chancel wall is a chamfered arched piscina, and in the north wall, a piscina with a cusped arch, decorated spandrel, drip mould, and label stops. An arcaded and decorated ashlar reredos is also found within. The nave and north aisle roofs are decorated. C19 furniture is present. Two brasses from around 1500, depicting a Knight and a Lady, are affixed to the north chancel wall.
