Description
The gate piers at the entrance to Rampton Hospital were built in 1931, designed by John Hatton Markham. They are made of red brick with stone dressings and flank the main entrance on Retford Road.
The gate piers are substantial, featuring tall square shafts that are stepped at each corner and rest on moulded stone bases. The capitals are designed as an entablature with a frieze of carved acanthus leaves. At the top, each pier is adorned with decorative urns that have swirling gadrooning and four handles, from which a richly carved cluster of foliage, flowers, and fruit cascades. Additionally, each pier has a pair of stone ashlar plinths attached to the outer side, which flank a footpath.
