Description

The stable block, dating to the late 18th century, is situated within Serlby Park. Constructed of red brick with ashlar detailing, the building is arranged around a quadrangle and has hipped slate roofs with dentillated eaves. The south front features a single brick gable and ridge stacks, along with a central wooden cupola topped with a lead roof and weather vane. The facade is arranged over one and a half storeys and consists of nine bays, with the central three bays slightly projecting and crowned by a pediment. A central flat-headed carriageway is present, incorporating a relieving arch above a first-floor opening, flanked by four ashlar hinge blocks and narrow rectangular panels. To the left of the carriageway are three arched wooden transom and mullion casements, while the right side has three corresponding panels. Above the carriageway is a single wooden slatted opening flanked by oval panels. A 20th-century clock face is set within the pediment.

The east front, also arranged over one and a half storeys and with nine bays, has a pediment over the centrally projecting three bays. A central arched panel is positioned within a relieving arch that rises above the first-floor opening. Four panels are visible either side of the arch, with some being arched and others containing glazing bar sash windows, a small casement, or wooden panels. Above this, a central glazing bar Yorkshire sash is flanked by a similar sash to the right and a panel to the left. The outer three bays each feature a central circular panel flanked by glazing bar Yorkshire sashes set in round openings.

The interior quadrangle’s east side has five archways, each with a double wooden door and ashlar hinge blocks; however, the leftmost archway is blocked and contains a sash window. A doorway with a flat head and panel sits to the left, while an arched doorway with a single fixed light is to the right. Above these, alternating square and round openings contain glazing bar Yorkshire sashes, with the exception of the leftmost round opening, which has a panel. The south side mirrors the features of the south front, including a central carriageway, doorways, slatted openings, and glazing bar overlights. The remaining fronts display various altered openings. The interior of the quadrangle includes a blocked arch with a sash window, an arched doorway with a fixed light above, and a variety of altered openings.
