Description

Crown Cottage is a late 18th-century house located in North Street, Sturton le Steeople. The building is constructed of brick and has a hipped pantile roof. It features a plinth and dentillated eaves, with two side wall stacks and two rear wall stacks. The house is two storeys plus garrets, with an L-shaped plan and three bays.

The front of the house has a central recessed timber doorcase with a hood and overlight, containing a 20th-century door, flanked by single glazing bar sashes. Above, a central dummy window is flanked by single, similar sashes, all with segmental heads. The rear elevation has a single-storey lean-to with a 20th-century casement window, and above, a plain sash window. A rear wing to the left has a Yorkshire sash window with a segmental head, and to the right, a stable door with a segmental head. Above this wing is another Yorkshire sash window.

Inside, the house features a common rafter roof with collars and clasp purlins, including three knee brackets to the attic tie beam. There is a stud and reed partition and a dogleg staircase with a landing; the staircase has square newels and vase and stem balusters. A single chamfered span beam is also present. A 19th-century iron kitchen range is a notable feature.
