Description

Glentworth Hall is a large country house with a complex history, dating back to approximately 1566, with significant alterations attributed to James Paine in the 18th century. The rear range is constructed of coursed limestone rubble from the 16th century, while the front facade is of red brick from the 18th century. The 18th-century front is characterised by a hipped slate roof with four small ridge stacks and four stacks to the rear. The two-storey, eleven-bay front features slightly projecting end bays and a central three-bay section, the latter topped with a pediment decorated with modillions. Architectural detailing includes an ashlar plinth, an ashlar first-floor band, and a narrower upper band. The central doorway is framed by a moulded doorcase, a pediment, consoles, and double doors with three-quarter glazed panels. The doorway is flanked by five rectangular windows on each side; those in the third bay on each side were altered in the 19th century into French windows. Eleven windows are positioned above. Remnants of the 16th-century rear range survive, consisting of two storeys and four irregular bays. A large gateway features a four-centred moulded head with a four-light mullion and transom window to the left and a small doorway with a four-centred head and plank door, with a small three-light cross mullion window above. Two bays to the right are slightly set back and contain a 20th-century doorway to the left and a 20th-century window to the right, with two similar windows above. The property is in a very dilapidated condition. The interior has been seriously vandalised and is now of no particular interest.
