Description
Holton Hall is a small country house built in 1785, with 19th-century additions and 20th-century alterations. It was constructed by J. Warmer, a local builder. The house is made of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a pantile roof, stone coped gables with kneelers, and two brick gable stacks. It has an L-shaped plan and stands three storeys tall with a five-bay garden front. The front has a brick plinth, first and second floor bands, and a dentillated eaves course.
The central entrance features a half-glazed door with a traceried Gothick fanlight, flanked by fluted Doric columns, a full metope entablature, and an open pediment above. Curved handrails lead to a baluster on either side of the door. The doorcase is flanked by two glazing bar sash windows. On the first floor, there are five similar windows, and the second floor has five shorter glazing bar sashes. All windows have flat splayed lintels with raised keystones.
The side front includes a single glazing bar sash on the ground and first floors, and a smaller painted blank opening on the second floor. There is also an early 19th-century three-storey, four-bay wing and a two-storey, four-bay wing at the rear. The three-storey range features a wide door under an elliptical arch with a traceried fanlight, and to the right, there are three deep glazing bar sashes. The first floor has one glazing bar sash and three tripartite sashes to the right. The second floor contains three glazing bar sashes and one tripartite sash. All windows on the side front have segmental brick arches and raised keystones.
Inside, the house has moulded cornices, panelled doors, and window shutters. The staircase features carved strings and elegant turned balusters. Holton Hall was built for the Dixon family.
