Description
The stables at Holton Hall date from the 17th century and have undergone alterations and additions in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is constructed from coursed rubble ironstone and red brick, topped with a partially hipped pantile roof. It is two storeys high, featuring an earlier two-bay block on the left and a later five-bay block on the right.
The left block has a ground floor made of coursed rubble, with a two-light window that has a brick surround and a single light window from the 17th century. The first floor is built in brick above a band and includes two louvred openings at the eaves. At the centre of the ridge, there is a timber-clad turret with a four-pane top light and a lead bell-shaped roof.
The right block features a first-floor band and a corbelled out eaves course with dentils. It has three semi-circular headed arches; the two outer arches are blocked, with the right one containing a 19th-century door topped by a four-pane overlight. Beyond this, there is a stable door flanked by single glazing bar sash windows. To the left of the arches, there are two additional doors, one of which is at mezzanine level and accessed by five steps. All openings have segmental heads, and the first floor has three louvred openings at the eaves. The stone section of the building was originally a dovecote, purchased by Dixon as part of the original estate. The stables are listed for their group value only.
