Description
The Church of St Margaret is a parish church that dates back to the 14th century, with later alterations made in 1749 and further modifications in 1889 by Hodgson Fowler of Sheffield. The church is constructed from coursed ironstone rubble, featuring red brick and ashlar dressings, along with a timber and lead bellcote. It comprises a nave with a western bellcote, a chancel, and a vestry.
The west end of the church includes a single splayed buttress and a 19th-century door set in a chamfered opening, which has a brick semi-circular head and an ashlar keystone. The bellcote is timber boarded, topped with a round dentillated cornice and a swept pointed lead roof, which is surmounted by a cross. Each face of the bellcote has semi-circular headed openings with moulded surrounds that contain louvres, and the north side features a trap door. The north side of the church is mostly blank, except for a 19th-century ashlar dressing. The vestry, added in the 19th century, has two semi-circular headed lights on the east side.
The east end of the chancel is blank but shows a plinth and traces of a blocked east window. The south side has three semi-circular headed windows with timber fixed lights and one casement window with six panes, all set under brick arches with ashlar keystones. Inside, the church is plain, featuring an elliptically headed chancel arch and a panelled ceiling with a cornice. Above the west door, there is a tablet inscribed "Queen Ann's bounty fell to this church in MDCCXLIX." Additionally, there is a plain memorial tablet in the chancel dedicated to Major General Bincliffe, who died in 1809.
