Description

De Aston School Headmaster's House is a Victorian Gothic red brick house built in 1863 by James Fowler. It features blue brick stringcourses and polychromatic dressings, topped with a steep pitched slate roof. The main facade is three bays wide and three storeys high, with a single bay projecting gable on one side. This gable has a square bay window at the ground floor and an angle bay above, with a single window on the top floor. All windows are adorned with stone transoms and mullions, featuring flat pointed arches above, polychromatic voussoirs, and herringbone tile infill. A central porch, supported by a buttress to the gable, has a polychromatic pointed arch and retains its original pointed door with iron hinges. The garden facade mirrors the single gable design, with twin windows at the ground floor and a buttress between them supporting an oriel window above. The back facade includes a single projecting modern bay window. The house is connected to contemporary school buildings that have been significantly altered.
