Description
The Methodist Centenary Chapel, built in 1863, is an impressive nonconformist chapel designed in a classical style. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings. The front features a tall prostyle Ionic portico supported by four columns and four pilasters. There are three round-headed doorways with boldly rusticated surrounds and heavy keystones, topped with a cornice and a miniature pediment. Above these doorways are three round-headed sash windows, each with blind balustrades below. The chapel has rusticated quoins and a bold string course beneath the first-floor windows, with a stone dentil cornice above and a slate roof.
The side elevations consist of six bays, with the two end bays slightly projecting and featuring quoins. The lower windows have sashed moulded surrounds, while the upper windows are round-headed with moulded round hoods. The central four bays have an attached arcade with giant stock brick pilasters. A parish room, dated 1891, is attached to the southeast corner. The chapel is also flanked by two sets of gatepiers with heavy iron railings and gates. Inside, many original fittings remain, including box pews, an oval gallery, and a grand double-decker pulpit.
