Description

The buildings at 14, 16, and 18 Union Street date to 1897 and were designed by Wm Mortimer & Son of Lincoln as shops. They are constructed of brick with stone dressings and a slate roof. Nos 14 and 16 retain their original shopfronts. The upper section of No. 14 features a six-light transom and mullioned window flanked by brick pilasters, topped with an entablature, strapwork gable, and stone finials. No. 16 has six windows, with two central windows having rounded heads and stone keystones. Decorative stone shafts rise from these windows, passing through the entablature into the elaborate Dutch gable, which contains a niche displaying the store's Beehive sign. The remaining four windows are similar, but with segmental heads, all above a stone balustrade that crowns the entablature. No. 18 has two sash windows below with segmental heads and stone keystones, supported by a continuous string course. Above this are a single sash window with alternating brick and stone voussoirs, and a small round-headed gable with stone coping.
