Description
Elswitha Hall is a substantial 18th-century town house made of red brick. It has a basement, attics, and three storeys, topped with a hipped pantile roof featuring a modillion cornice. The façade includes five windows with hung sashes that have glazing bars, set in shallow reveals with flat arches and brick voussoirs. The entrance is accessed by stone steps and features a doorway with an eared architrave surround, large console brackets, and a broken segmental pediment. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing with a semi-circular bow. This building is notable as the birthplace of Sir Halford J Mackinder, the geographer, who lived from 1861 to 1947. Elswitha Hall, along with its gatepiers, forms a group of historical significance.
