Description
The lych gate and wall of the Church of St Hugh of Avalon, built in 1879 by John Loughborough Pearson, are located to the west, north, and south of the church. The structure is made of red brick with ashlar dressings. The lych gate on the right features a pointed arch with a moulded ashlar hood mould and iron railed gates. Above the gateway, there is an ashlar dressed gable with pronounced kneelers and small trefoils on both the north and south sides. A low wall extends to the north, topped with ashlar coping and low pilaster buttresses on the east side. The taller walls on the north and south sides rise eastwards in three large steps, also featuring brick coping and pilaster buttresses. This structure is included for its group value.
