Description

A pair of estate cottages, now houses, dating from the mid-19th century, with later 20th-century alterations. Constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and steep-pitched slate roofs, the cottages are built in a Tudor Revival style. They feature two shouldered external gable stacks with chamfered copings. The design includes a plinth, quoins, coped gables with kneelers and spiked finials. The cottages are arranged over two storeys with a three-window front. The layout is a ‘half-H’ plan. Windows have stone surrounds and mullions, set beneath segmental pointed relieving arches. A large through-eaves dormer with two single-light windows sits in the recessed centre. Below, a lean-to porch is supported by a central wooden post and incorporates arch braces, sheltering two segmental pointed board doors with ornamental hinges. The wings contain two-light windows with slit breathers above, and three-light windows below; the windows in the left wing have been reglazed. These cottages were originally built to provide accommodation for workers on the Belton estate by the Brownlow family of Belton House.
