Description
The Old School, also known as School House, is a former school building that has been converted into a house. It was constructed in 1865 and features some late 20th-century additions and alterations. The building is made of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and has a stone slate roof. It is designed in the Tudor Revival style and has a large external rear wall stack with a square stone flue set diagonally.
The structure has a plinth, quoins, coped gables with kneelers, and iron finials. It is a single-storey building with three bays arranged in an L-plan. On the right side, there is a 4-centred arched board door with a datestone above it. On the left side, there are two reglazed three-light windows featuring chamfered stone mullions and surrounds. The left gable includes a canted stone bay window with a gabled parapet and a central stone mullioned cross casement, above which is a quatrefoil in a sunken panel. The rear wing has late 20th-century windows. This educational building was established for the workers on the Belton estate by the Brownlow family of Belton House.
