Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church dating to 1865, designed by R. Coad. It incorporates some 14th-century fabric in the north aisle. The church is constructed of squared limestone rubble with slate roofs. It consists of a western tower, a nave, aisles, and a chancel.
The three-stage tower features a moulded plinth, string courses, a corbel table, and an octagonal broach spire with a single set of lucarnes on each face. Stepped corner buttresses are present. The belfry stage has two-light louvred openings with trefoil heads to the lights and quatrefoils above. A small trefoil-headed light is visible on the south side of the second stage. The west doorway has a triple-chamfered pointed surround with a two-light window above. A small light is also located on the second stage, mirroring the south side. An octagonal stair turret rises on the north side.
The north aisle has a two-light window in the west and a pair of three-light windows along the north side. The easternmost window is 14th-century, with intersecting tracery, a hood mould, and human and beast head stops. The vestry has two trefoil-headed lancets on the north side, and a single lancet with a trefoil above on the east. The east window is of three lights in a Geometric style. The south chancel wall has a pointed doorway flanked by single two-light windows. The east wall of the south aisle has a two-light window, a matching three-light window, and a similar two-light window on the south side. A further two-light window is located in the west wall. All tracery is in an Early Decorated style. The south doorway has a pointed moulded surround with a hood mould and human head label stops.
Inside, the church features a 14th-century two-bay north arcade with a single chamfered arch, a circular pier with a naturalistic capital, and rectangular responds with moulded imposts. There is also a 19th-century two-bay south arcade with double-chamfered arches, an octagonal pier, and responds. A 19th-century triple-chamfered tower arch has octagonal responds, and a double-chamfered and moulded chancel arch features a semi-circular respond and pink marble angle shafts with annular capitals.
The church contains a fine set of carved woodwork fittings, including a reredos, altar table, panelling to the chancel, organ case, choir stalls, a screen, a pulpit, a tower screen, and a tall Gothic font cover, all crafted by Rev. W. E. Thorold around 1880. 19th-century stained glass is also present. Painted texts adorn the nave, chancel, and tower arches. A 19th-century font is in Early English style.
