Description
The Village Cross, dating from the 15th century and converted in 1819, is located in Deeping St. James on Eastgate. It is constructed from squared limestone rubble and ashlar, featuring a square plan with a double stepped plinth. On the north side, there is a panelled and barred door with a plain ashlar lintel. Above the door, the cross base is coped and has enriched cusped six-lank panels and shields, with stepped angle buttresses that are adorned with embattled friezes; the frieze on the north side is inscribed with the year 1819. Topping the structure is a pyramidal stone roof, which is crowned by a reset fragment of a crocketed nodding ogee canopy. Inside, there are three semi-circular recessed and semi-domed seats, each with attached chains. The Village Cross is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument No. 69.
