Description

Brownlow Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in 1774 and further changes in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The roof is made of Collyweston slate, characterized by raised stone coped gables, a single ridge, and two gable stacks with ashlar bases and brick tops. The building has a three-unit plan and stands two stories high with a garret, presenting a four-bay front. The entrance is off-centre, featuring a half-glazed door, with a single three-light glazing bar casement to the left and a pair to the right. Above the door is an inscribed shield with a small cornice that reads "RC, 1774," accompanied by a heraldic hand bearing the device of Viscount Tyrconnel. All openings are framed with ashlar reveals and have chamfered timber lintels. Inside, there is a dogleg staircase from the late 18th century, which has square newels and knopped circular balusters. In the garret, there is a light open screen made of diagonally set lathing, designed to create a cooling draught for cheese storage. The roof structure is of the staggered butt purlin type.
