Description

Clifton House is a house dating from around 1770, located on Church Lane in Timberland. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar and brick dressings and features a slate roof with two brick gable stacks. The building has brick bands at the first floor and eaves, topped by a brick parapet with ashlar coping. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The central entrance consists of a round-headed doorway framed by a painted ashlar surround, which includes reeded pilasters, panel brackets, and a hood. The door is half-glazed and topped with an ornate fanlight. Flanking the entrance are single glazing bar sash windows with margin lights, each featuring cut brick wedge lintels and ashlar keystones. On the upper floor, there are three more glazing bar sashes with cut brick wedge lintels.

To either side of the main building are single-storey lean-tos, each with ramped brick coped parapets and a round-headed blank panel; the left one is rendered and painted. At the rear, there is a lower, rendered, two-storey wing with four bays and a hipped slate roof. This wing has an off-centre Classical doorcase with a pediment and a panel door, along with segment-headed sliding sashes.

Inside, there is a round-headed moulded archway and an 18th-century stick baluster staircase, which features a segment-headed moulded archway with a keystone below. Most of the panel doors and many cupboards from the original design are still intact.
