Description

Belle Vista, now Lister Place, is a house dating to circa 1720. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, and has a plain tile roof with four gable stacks. The roof has stone coped gables with kneelers. The house features plain ashlar quoins, a plinth, first and second floor bands, and a coved eaves cornice. It is arranged in a T-plan, with two storeys and an attic. The east front has five bays, with a slightly projecting central bay topped by a tall pediment. The central doorway is approached by two semi-circular steps, and has a plain ashlar surround with a narrow staff moulding topped by a segmental pediment. It contains double 19th-century half-glazed doors with a three-light overlight. Original glazing bar sashes are present on the ground floor, with five similar sashes above, and a single similar sash in the pediment; all windows have plain ashlar surrounds. Flanking the pediment are single gabled dormers with small sashes. The south front of the projecting three-bay rear wing has six original wooden cross windows with iron casements under segmental brick heads and two gabled domes above. A low, single-bay wing projects beyond the rear wing. Inside, there is a fine contemporary single-flight return wooden staircase with three turned balusters per tread. Other interior features include a moulded plaster segmental hall arch with a keystone, a fine panelled room with an alabaster fireplace. The brick garden walls, coped with ashlar, have centrally placed iron gates with plain brick gatepiers, having moulded ashlar bases and caps. The remaining garden walls to the south are not of special interest.
