Description
Canwick House is a former rectory, dating to 1889 and designed by William Watkins in the Queen Anne Revival style. It is now a retirement home. The house is constructed of red brick with ashlar and terracotta dressings, and has plain tile hipped roofs with decorative ridge tiles and finials, along with five moulded brick stacks. It is two storeys high plus attics.
The south, or garden, front has seven irregular bays. The slightly projecting central section features three sashes with cut brick scroll jambs and ornate open pedimented hoods. To the left is a canted brick bay window with a curving coped parapet and three sashes with moulded stone surrounds and ornate open pediments. A glazed doorway is set back, with four stone steps leading up to it. To the left of this is a projecting square bay window with two sashes and, above, two sashes with decorative terracotta panels between and plain pilasters, topped by a hipped roof. Further left are two sashes with moulded ashlar surrounds, the left window incorporating a linking surround to its upper sash, with a decorative terracotta panel between and topped by an open pediment. This section is topped by a large and a small Dutch gable. To the right of this is a sash with a moulded ashlar surround and ornate pediment. All windows on this front have divided upper and segment-headed lower sashes. Beyond this, to the left, are two glazing bar sashes, with another similar sash above, topped by a Dutch gable. Attached to the south-east is a conservatory with original glazing and a 20th-century roof. Each end has a tall external stack that rises through an upper dormer window with casements and decorative plaster side panels. The north-east corner features a two-storey bay with three stone cross casements to each floor and decorative terracotta panels between.
The north, or entrance, front has an off-centre doorway with three stone steps and a four-centred arched doorway with a part-glazed door and divided overlight topped by a pediment. To the right is a plain sash with a semicircular overlight and keystone, above which are two plain sashes with cut brick surrounds and ornate hoods. To the right again is a small circular window. Above this is a plain sash in a cut brick surround with a keystone and open pediment topped by a Dutch gable. To the right is a two-light corner dormer. To the left is a large round-headed stair window, also topped by a Dutch gable. Beyond this, to the right, are a door and two windows, with, above them, a single glazing bar sash to each floor with a linking cut brick surround and decorative terracotta panel between, above which is a pedimented Dutch gable.
