Description

The former Parish Church of St. Nicholas, now a shed, dates from the 14th century and was altered in 1882. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, with some limestone ashlar dressings, and features a plain tiled roof with raised stone coped gables. The building includes a narthex, a nave with a bellcote, and an apsidal chancel.

At the west end, there is a gabled narthex that runs across the axis of the church, featuring three small lancet windows with roll moulded surrounds. The west gable of the nave has a large circular window with cinquelobed tracery, and the base of a timber bellcote supported by curved ashlar corbels. On the north side, the narthex has a three-light mullioned and transomed window with a plain ashlar lintel and a brick relieving arch. The north wall of the nave includes a moulded plinth, a cill band, and a dentillated eaves course, along with three lancet windows that have roll moulded surrounds.

The apse features a double plinth and cill band and contains seven trefoil-headed lancets. On the south side of the apse, there is a narrow projecting rectangular bay with two pierced quatrefoils in an ashlar block. The south side of the nave mirrors the north side, but includes two pilaster buttresses with tumbling and pointed ashlar tops. The south door is pointed with a moulded head and a triangular hood that has an ammonite stop and a floriate finial.

Inside, there is a door to the vestry that incorporates reset 14th-century work from the earlier church at Spanby, featuring a double roll moulded and pointed surround with a small human head above it. The nave doorway is also pointed and roll moulded. The broad pointed chancel arch has moulded imposts and two rolled orders leading to the stepped head, with an ovolo moulded hood that has ammonite stops. The apse has a dentillated cornice, and the sanctuary floor is adorned with fine Minton tiles. All fittings have been removed.
